AN AVANT-GARDE DINING EXPERIENCE AT THIS JAPANESE RESTAURANT IN DUBAI

Tabu serves authentic yet modern Japanese cuisine, showcased and plated with an artistic finesse.

Located at the rooftop of the St Regis Downtown, Tabu is a dinner show venue. The vast space has a distinctly Japanese decor and a warm but mysterious ambiance. The place was packed on a Wednesday evening which was refreshing to see. Just as we sat down the first performance began with music and dance that really engaged the entire room. We watched in awe as the performer made her way through the room.

Once we finally focused on the menu we were quick to pick a mix of cold and hot starters followed by two mains. We started with the light seaweed salad with white gomae, pomegranate and crispy leeks.

Next was the distinctly tasty maki roll made with prawn tempura, seared hamachi, avocado and drizzled with a ceviche sauce. We had our eyes on the otoro tartare served in sesame cones with avo-yuzu kosho and topped with caviar. It had quite the zing! Finally from the hot starters, the tofu croquette with green yuzu sauce was simple yet flavorful.

In the mains the slow braised Wagyu beef short rib with Japanese rice and shiitake mushroom was simply fantastic-warm and hearty this won us over! Meanwhile the ‘Black’ black cod made quite the entrance on our table. Before the lid was lifted, the waiter expertly smoked it in front of us. A great change from the usual black cod we are used to seeing across Dubai, this one is definitely a show-stopper.

Overall everything on the menu sings with flavor, zing and natural bright colors which only enhance the theatrical food service. The chef experiments with innovative culinary approaches to ensure that the guests’ senses are fed by intriguing them with interactive live cooking.
