A hearty and casual Thai dinner in a quirky decor
Craving Thai street style food? Then Wise Kwai is the spot to head to that will not only satiate your Thai food cravings but also lift your mood with their quirky and colorful decor.
Wise Kwai is named after a famous Thai movie and the decor includes many different details referring to cinema, from the printed movie table sets, to a golden video camera on the main bar, vintage camera boxes hanging on a wall, heavy old fashioned and colorful velvet curtains like those found in theaters.
What makes the decor totally unique though is the colorful and artsy ceiling lamps that look like colorful psychedelic flat fans – hanging above tables. These ceiling lamps pair well with the pastel chairs – turquoise, orange, yellow and add a seriously individual look.
Once settled, we had a hard time picking our starters and mains as there were a lot of appetizing and varied options to choose from. We went for a comfy and flavorful creamy coconut soup prepared with roasted duck slices, roasted coconut, different types of mushroom and Thai herbs. Our spicy green mango salad came with prawns and cashew nuts (50 AED) and was large enough to share for two people.
Whether you go for a starter or main course, prices are very appealing – mostly between 40 to 70 AED – and portions quite generous. If you fancy seafood, noodles or meat, Wise Kwai has you covered with aplenty appealing options. We picked a delicious green curry which came with large prawns and soft baby eggplants and a deep fried fish coming in a sweet and sour sauce. Nice presentation, as the whole fish was decorated with pineapple, tomato, spring onion, onion and sweet chili. We enjoyed that each dish was brought to the table in colorful metallic pots or boxes adding that quintessential street style to the experience.
To finish on a sweet and light note, we hesitated between their three homemade ice creams – sweet chili Thai, tamarind and coconut-and finally picked the creamy coconut ice cream which didn’t disappoint!
As the restaurant has limited seating and is very popular, we highly recommend you book a table before visiting to avoid any disappointment. Just be aware that the restaurant is not licensed.
