The Sandwich Room by The Guild is a must-try.
The Guild is a homegrown brasserie in the heart of DIFC, inspired by the grand dining rooms of New York. Hidden behind a curtain, the venue is creatively divided into different spaces, from The Nursery and The Potting Shed to The Aviary, Rockpool and The Salon.
Every Thursday and Friday, The Guild’s back door opens sharp at 12pm for The Sandwich Room, a lunchtime-only affair serving until sold out, which is usually well before 2pm. Don’t be intimidated by the line out the door. Simply join the queue and wait your turn, with live acoustic music keeping you entertained along the way. While you do, it’s hard not to eye up the three sandwiches on offer: chicken, beef and lamb.
The chefs approach each sandwich with the same attention as any dish on The Guild’s menu, with plenty of thought going into every element. Chicken, beef and lamb come piled with generous fillings and sauces, tucked into freshly baked bread. On the side, choose between crispy duck-fat fries or roast potatoes, with a pot of rich, dark gravy made for dipping everything into, sandwich included. The combinations are playful yet deliberate, with generous fillings that almost overwhelm the bread, in the best way possible. This is the kind of food best eaten with your hands, mess and all.
The only challenge is resisting the urge to tuck in straight away. The Sandwich Room is strictly takeaway, so you’ll need to find a spot nearby before making a start.
The humble sandwich has come a long way. At The Sandwich Room, restaurant-level flavours meet comfort food, with generous portions. Casual, satisfying and made for a robust appetite, it’s well worth the wait.
