Portuguese food is not something we hear about much in Dubai but now thanks to Tasca at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, we don’t have to go far to enjoy this flavorful cuisine.
We received an invitation to experience the city’s Portuguese restaurant, curated by acclaimed Portuguese chef José Avillez.
The view is simply amazing-while one side overlooks the impressive Dubai skyline, the other offers uninterrupted views of the pool and the sea. As it was a perfect early February afternoon, we chose to sit outdoors and enjoy the light breeze and stunning view.
The menu consists of an eclectic mix of starters, small bites, dishes to share and a variety of mains. We began with playfully presented wagyu tartare, followed by the most delectable prawns in garlic sauce that we scooped up with homemade bread buns.
We had to try a Portuguese favorite-clams in coriander and garlic sauce. We picked the clams right off the plate and scooped up the sauce in the shell. Overall, this simple dish was stunningly fresh and flavorful.
For the main course we were served a medley of seafood cooked with rice and a hearty broth. We also tried the salted cod served with potatoes, egg and onion cream-a simple combination that was elevated with the side of homemade hot sauce we requested. These dishes were accompanied with a side Portuguese French fries, that were an added indulgence but worth the calories. A hearty selection we were more than just satisfied with the array of dishes and the eclectic flavors.
Once done with the main meal it was time for us to just take a break or what the Portuguese call ‘Sobremesa’. This is a tradition that involves relaxing and hanging out after a meal. Of course, at Tasca, it also means that dessert will be brought out to the table. This last course was definitely the grand finale in all its glory. We were served a cone topped with three textures of chocolate and topped with salted caramel and popcorn.
