We discover an intimate spot serving authentic Ethiopian food in Dubai.
With Dubai being a melting pot of different cultures, trying cuisine from different countries in the world is one of our favourite pastimes. So when we heard about an Ethiopian restaurant in the heart of Karama, we couldn’t get there fast enough.
The friendly staff at the restaurant had provided us with a perfect set of directions, so we arrived without getting lost in the maze of Karama – a first for us and a great start! The restaurant is a small, but cheerful space, with walls covered in a bright orange hue and distinctive African memorabilia.
The seating is traditional, with benches, stools, and Mesab (a handmade hourglass-shaped table, with a cover that resembles a hat). The menu has no descriptions, so the staff hurried to our rescue to recommend dishes. We opted for the ‘Zagol Special’ (35 AED) – a platter that features a selection of house specials.
The meal arrived on a large platter, featuring Injera (a sour pancake-like bread) covered in an assortment of chicken, lamb, beef, vegetables and salad, with ‘Lab’, (a soft white cheese) sprinkled on top. The meat and chicken (with the exception of the raw beef) were cooked in a dark, spicy curry sauce, whilst the vegetables were stir-fried. With no cutlery offered, we dug right in with our hands!
Ethiopian cuisine has a distinct flavour – and although the cuisine won’t be to everyone’s tastes, it is definitely worth trying at least once. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and loved the authentic setting and pleasant atmosphere.
