We’ve been searching for an authentic and affordable Moroccan restaurant in Dubai for a while now – and have finally stumbled upon a real gem…
Conveniently located on Jumeirah Beach Road, Moulay Youssef Restaurant is a cosy space decorated in traditional Moroccan style. Our visit got off to a great start when we realised that most clients were Moroccan – always a good sign!
No one should visit a Moroccan restaurant without tasting their house specialities, so we decided to try the Chicken Couscous (37 AED) and Tagine Beef (39 AED). The Couscous was the first to arrive – fluffy pieces of white grain lying under courgette, pumpkin, carrot and cabbage. The chunky vegetables and chicken had been slow cooked for hours and each bite effortlessly tore apart and melted in our mouth. The side of thick gravy added a subtle taste with its hint of cinnamon and cumin.
The Beef Tagine was equally delicious – chunky pieces of meat that fell off the bone. The flavours were distinctly North African, with bay leaf, ginger, saffron and cinnamon infused into the meat and gravy. Plump pieces of soft prune and crunchy almond added texture and flavour. Both dishes were served in the typical clay tagine, creating a traditional and authentic feel.
We picked a “Corne de Gazelle” (an almond croissant Moroccan speciality) for dessert, along with an authentic Moroccan Mint Tea.
Forget Dubai – pay a visit to Moulay Youssef and you will be transported straight to Marrakech. And we will definitely be heading back for another visit soon.
