Rewind a few years and nobody under retirement age would have been caught dead with a sewing machine – but these days, it’s one of the coolest hobbies we can take up. With the trend for all things vintage, owning a sewing machine gives you the power to turn your pre-loved clothes into quirky cushions, bedcovers, fabric handbags and accessories – not to mention customizing the pieces you still wear to give them a unique new spin.
If you want to get creative, we have found a store in Dubai that offers lessons in using sewing machines. Craftland – located in Town Centre, Jumeirah – has a classroom at the back of the shop, which fits up to eight people. The sessions last for 2.5 hours, where you will learn the basic skills required to use a sewing machine.
Some students are more gifted than others (we don’t count ourselves amongst the top in the class!), but at the end of the session, you should have mastered the basic skills to start getting creative at home. You can even take your own unfinished pieces to the class to get help with them – and if you don’t own a machine, you can rent one for the course. Better still, if you buy your machine in Craftland, the courses are free.
