Love Mexican food, but bored of the commercial feel of restaurants in tourist spots? Do not despair – as a slice of the real Mexico is closer than you might think…
Maria Bonita Taco Shop, based in Umm Suqeim, will add a splash of colour to your day. Customers are invited to sit at sturdy wooden tables on the veranda (complete with squawking parrot) or inside, where the bright interior has a fiesta feel – and Nachos and salsa are promptly delivered to ward off hunger pangs.
The menu is packed with favourites like Fajitas, Quesadillas, and Burritos – alongside more traditional offerings like Ensalada de Nopales (Mexican Cactus Salad) and Filete de Pescado Yucatan (Grilled Fish in Achiote Spice). The restaurant might not be licensed, but you won’t care when you catch sight of the vast selection of fruit-based cocktails on the menu.
The food and drink tastes good, as you’d expect from any of the Mexican eateries in Dubai – but it’s really the unique ambience that people come for… We felt like we’d been transported to Mexico City, which made it refreshingly different to other Dubai-based restaurants we have tried.
Maria Bonita was opened by Jorge de Anda in 2003; a Mexican pilot who saw the necessity of real Mexican food in Dubai. And we’re glad he had the brainwave – as this place has become a firm favourite.
