HOW TO CREATE THE ULTIMATE CAPSULE WARDROBE

When less is definitely more!

Start 2019 with organizing your wardrobe and decluttering.  If you are overwhelmed with closet chaos or your simply curious about the benefits of dressing with less, the capsule wardrobe is for you.

Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe”, originally coined the term capsule wardrobe in the 1970s. She used the concept to help women refine their wardrobe to include only high-quality essentials that you can wear over and over again. That way you’re not filling up your space with items that you’ll be totally over by next season. And you’ll free your closet of all of the unnecessary clutter, which often makes choosing an outfit in the morning complicated.

Usually, a capsule consists of a set number of colour coordinating pieces that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces. Clothing is only added to the selection at the start of each capsule, encouraging you to remix and re-wear rather than shopping for new pieces.

Because we don’t have such distinct seasons here in the UAE, you’ll want to focus your capsule around lightweight, timeless pieces that you can adapt to current trends using accessories.

To try it out for yourself this year, here are a few ground rules to keep in mind:

  1. Limit your wardrobe: About 30-40 items is a good rule of thumb. Underwear, workout clothing and pyjamas don’t count.
  2. Be tough: If you haven’t worn it in a year, IT HAS TO GO!
  3. Keep it simple: The goal is to minimize. Store or donate what you don’t need and try to avoid shopping.
