VOLVO OCEAN RACE ARRIVES IN ABU DHABI

Abu Dhabi Volvo Ocean Race

Sail ahead

Known as the ‘Everest of sailing’ the Volvo Ocean Race is no ordinary feat of yachtsmanship. Long, gruelling and dangerous, this is a test of nerve and stamina as much as it is skill and only the most determined and dedicated sailors take part. The fact that the famous race is making its second stop in the UAE capital is testament to the emirate’s growing appeal as a serious yacht-racing destination; it’s no longer just pleasure boats and luxury vessels gliding through our waters.

Much of the credit for this goes to Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, who became the first UAE team ever to compete in the historic race during the 2011-2012 edition. The crew, skippered by British sailing and Olympic veteran Ian Walker, came fifth in the overall round-the-world race but sailed to victory in the Abu Dhabi in-port competition, giving UAE crowds a sight to cheer for.

It’s not just the sailing that makes this event worth attending, however.

Destination Village, open from December 12 to January 3, brings a 23-day long festival to Abu Dhabi’s Corniche breakwater and it’s worth popping down any time to check out the hospitality, events, activities, boutique booths, open-air cinema, kid’s zones, concerts and many other attractions taking place alongside the more serious business of sailing.
