Standing tall on the north-west bank of Giudecca Island, this red-brick property with an imposing neo-gothic façade offers a serene escape from the hustle of La Serenissima—what Venice was once known as in its golden days. Just a 10-minute boat ride from St. Mark’s Square and separated by the narrow Giudecca Canal, the tranquil islet offers charming canals, mesmerizing views, and a laid-back vibe—giving you a chance to live like a local while enjoying a quieter, more authentic side of Venice.

Steeped in history, this landmark of industrial architecture was built in the 19th century as a flour mill employing 1500 people, owned by the astute businessman Giovanni Stucky. After a series of unfortunate events and lying empty for many years, it was carefully renovated and converted into the Hilton Molino Stucky, the largest hotel in Venice, in 2007. Named after its former owner, “G. STUCKY” is engraved on the building’s exterior beneath the iconic clock, and his statue, placed on the hotel grounds, honours his rich legacy.

The comfortable water taxi from the airport, arranged by the hotel, dropped us right in front of the hotel-the 25-minute scenic ride felt like something out of a movie. In contrast to the historical façade, inside the classic Venetian space has been given a modern twist. A welcoming, unhurried space, the check-in area is discreetly placed on one side and the process is seamless as the staff is efficient and helpful. The rest of the open space is filled with cushy lounge seating where we quickly made ourselves comfortable. The ground floor corridors display photos, relics and the history of the building-creating a sense of nostalgia and connection to the past.

Once on the 5th floor we couldn’t help but marvel at how the hallway seamlessly blends contemporary décor with the original cast iron pillars-a nod to the historical past. Boasting 379 rooms and suits, there is no bad view here-while some of the rooms overlook the courtyard, our twin deluxe room offered sweeping views across the famous lagoon and onto Venice’s historic skyline of domes and spires. The view at sunrise was especially breathtaking as the sky lit up with soft hues the city was bathed in a warm golden hue. As a corner room, the side window framed a view of the striking clock tower, which has stood the test of time and continues to be one of the most imposing landmarks of a bygone era.

The rooms are stylish and elegant, and letting the view do the talking. The tastefully decorated, cozy space features a neat neutral palette, sleek fixtures, and a Murano chandelier that is a tribute to the local artisans and their precious craft. The wallpaper depicts iconic Venice landmarks in a more modern aesthetic-giving the room a fresh, artistic touch. Other nautical wall hangings are also a homage to the floating city. There is a full-to-the-brim minibar with contents that cater to every taste. The luxe marble-clad bathroom is stocked with the poshest Crabtree and Evelyn products, giving you the feeling of a spa.

If you want something grander then the new Presidential Suite is the highest and largest suite in town, with views of Venice and the lagoon from the large windows. Spreading across two floors, the suite is accessed by a separate lift, and has direct access to the panoramic swimming pool terrace. Apart from a private jacuzzi it also includes a large living room with Murano glass design details and a dining room, two bedrooms (one with a double bed and one with twin beds) with the finest linens, a walk-in closet, four bathrooms, and a kitchenette.

The hotel has a selection of dining options that are not just there for when you feel lazy, the locally sourced ingredients and the gourmet menus make them a memorable experience. From local flavors at Bacaromi, to Italian and international dishes at Rialto, and signature dishes at Aromi, not to forget the rooftop, which hosts a seasonal pool & Skyline Bar – the highest bar in Venice with incredible panoramic views of the city and amazing mixologists. The options are fantastic!

Our dinner at Bacaromi, a quintessential Venetian bacaro gave us a taste of the most authentic local flavours and culture. With antiques and curiosities adorning the walls and colourful mosaic tiled flooring, the rustic and characterful décor of Bacaromi is that of a typical local eatery. We enjoyed the famous Cicchetti-Venetian tapas, to the freshest fish, seafood pasta, and wholesome risotto in true Venetian style. In the warmer months, the outdoor terrace seating is a coveted spot, offering views of the palazzos across the lagoon.

Breakfast is a serious affair at the hotel—this is not one of those basic bites you grab before heading out for a day of exploring. Instead, it’s an impressive spread that you’ll want to take your time enjoying. From a glorious display of local cheeses and flaky pastries to eggs made to order, perhaps our favourite part was the luxurious trolley service, where the freshly baked cornetti were filled with a delicious custard. The obliging staff will ensure your coffee is always served hot and will even arrange a to-go cup if you’d like.

Hilton’s signature eforea spa on the property is the place to unwind and recharge after a long day of sightseeing. Designed to provide a serene, calming environment, they offer a range of wellness-focused treatments and therapies that combine modern techniques with traditional practices. For those looking to work off those extra pasta calories, you can head to the state-of-the-art Fitness Centre or take a few laps in the panoramic seasonal swimming pool, with a stunning view of Venice. This pool offers St. Mark’s Campanile a run for its money with its 360-degree views.

The hotel has water buses that take you back and forth from Zattere (St Mark’s Square and just a few meters away there is also the 24-hour public water bus station. Planning a trip to Venice can be overwhelming—with so much to discover, it’s best to consult the experienced concierge, who can not only guide you but also help arrange excursions, including a must-do trip to the Murano glass factories.
