Have you heard of Manuka Honey? We hadn’t until recently, but it seems we have been missing out… The floral honey, which only grows in New Zealand and parts of Australia, has powerful health benefits – and when we heard scientists recommending that we try it, we made it our mission to find a supplier in Dubai.
The superfood contains 10 times more antibacterial and antiseptic properties than regular honey. Different types have different strengths – so the product boasts a unique UMF certification system (meaning ‘Unique Manuka Factor’) so we know what we are buying. The ratings range between UMF+5 and UMF +25 – with the higher numbers meaning that the honey is more potent and effective (look for UMF 10 or higher to guarantee efficiency).
Manuka Honey has antiviral and antibacterial benefits, which is a great excuse for scoffing the stuff at the first sign of a cold or sore throat! Enjoy it neat, mixed with lemon juice and hot water, or on toast or plain yoghurt as a snack. It can also be applied externally on burns to help heal skin, internally to soothe mouth ulcers, or taken as an antiseptic in case of infection.
