A CHARMING IRANI CAFE STEEPED IN NOSTALGIA

Batliwala & Co. is a love letter to the Irani cafés of Bombay.

Born in Bombay and lovingly recreated in Dubai, Batliwala & Co. pays homage to the timeless spirit of the traditional Irani cafe. Bringing back a dining culture that began over 1,200 years ago, when Zoroastrian settlers fleeing Persia first arrived in Gujarat and later made their way to Bombay.

Decorated in a playful, characterful style, vintage furnishings and cultural keepsakes create an atmosphere steeped in nostalgia. From retro sewing machines and radios to framed photographs and camera rolls, it is like time traveling to a bygone era.

One of the most endearing touches is the recreation of a traditional Irani provision shop at the entrance. Designed to mirror the original neighbourhood stores, the space is lined with jars and pantry staples(all free to take) and even features a charming signpost.A subtle nod to the fact that these Irani cafés began as humble provision shops.

The menu offers a wonderful introduction to Parsi cuisine-a perfectly balanced fusion of Persian refinement and Indian richness. Expect fragrant saffron, nuts and gently stewed meats from the Persian side, layered with the coconut, coriander, chillies and bolder spices of India. The result is comforting, wholesome fare, layered with a touch of sweetness, dried fruits and bold flavours.

Begin with the Juhu Beach Pani Puri-a refreshingly tangy Bombay street-style classic that was gone in minutes. The soft, buttery bun maska is an absolute joy when dunked straight into the strong cup of Irani chai. The signature keema pao is a winner-pillowy, freshly baked bread served with a generous helping of boldly spiced meat.

At the heart of Parsi cooking, the dhansak is a star-a hearty one-plate meal of meat and slow-cooked lentils, served with caramelised onions, vegetables and kachumber.

No Parsi table feels complete without the famed Britannia-style berry pulao (often called Parsi pulao here)-fragrant rice jewelled with berries and nuts, striking that ideal sweet-savoury balance the cuisine is loved for.

For dessert, the mawa cake is dense, buttery with a hint of cardamom, while the iconic wedding sweet lagan nu custard is rich, creamy, and seriously indulgent.
