Reif Japanese Kushiyaki is our go-to whenever we are in craving some authentic Japanese street food flavors. Chef Reif is one of Dubai’s best known culinary personalities, with several outlets in Dubai and many more to come both here and abroad (hello Egypt!).
This homegrown street food spot is his first outpost and our personal favourite. Tucked away in Dar Wasl, it is an all-day lunch and dinner concept. Elegant and cozy, the space and menu have been designed to take diners on a truly traditional Japanese street food journey with a modern twist.
The carefully curated interior reflects Reif’s very personal fun, quirky and casual style. In fact his favourite childhood comic, Astro Boy, takes centre stage on the entrance wall as a vibrant and interactive 3D panel created by local Lebanese artist, Lauris Zailaa.

The eclectic menu brings the best of Japanese street fare and as if that wasn’t enough to keep us coming back, there is now a new weekday lunch menu, we recently tried. Teishoku Trays is the weekday offering for lunch that is priced at an affordable 85 AED.
Affordable set meals are referred to as Teishoku, in Japan and is a popular concept there. Unlike bento boxes that consist of packed lunches eaten when on-the-go, these tray style meals are based on meals served at temples known as ichiju-issai (“one soup, one side”).
The Reif classic Japanese set menu consists of a main dish, soup, salad, and dessert. The main entrée has an option of a veggie Priced at AED 85, the four-course menu served on a tray offers miso soup; green salad; a choice of donburi bowls with stir-fried Angus beef, assorted raw fish or vegetable Japanese curry; and dessert.
We adored our angus beef bowl that was robust and flavorful. Our dining partner’s raw fish was delicate and light in comparison. Both dishes along with the simple salad and hearty soup were filling and satisfying. The matcha fondant dessert totally won us over and we are tempted to go back to have it on its own with a side of coffee.
Priced at just 85 AED, this is the ideal weekday lunch to try.
