A hot yoga class at SweatShop Dubai in Jumeirah Lake Towers
Temperatures may be dropping outside but at Sweatshop Studios, the new boutique fitness venue in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, they are ramping up the heat. This is not the draining and exhausting experience we have come to associate with other hot-yoga methods such as Bikram, where only those with a high level of fitness can bear the intense heat; Hot Yoga is a class open to anyone and, though hard work, it’s easy to see why so many people are enjoying it.
The room is heated to about 102 degrees Farenheit (38° C), which is definitely warm but not unbearable – you don’t break a sweat until you start moving. Luckily, the momentum remains slow throughout the class, making this a manageable, though still demanding hour-long workout. Gentle background music sets the pace and a measured breathing rhythm is key to passing from pose to stretch and back again in a fluid motion.
One look at Sweatshop Studio’s wall of fame, which bears signed polaroids of grinning, sweaty people post-class, is enough to give doubtful clients the nudge they need to give it a go.
Once the session is over not only do the limbs will feel supple but you feel an amazing sense of calmness, that is both physical and mental.
