It’s not every day that you find yourself strapped to a six-foot man with a parachute billowing behind you. The Top Gun theme tune flashes through my mind – an 80s nightmare revisited – but before I can scream “Maverick”, I’m airborne. And it’s awesome.

It’s safe to say that your arrival at the picturesque Zighy Bay, Six Senses resort, will not be run of the mill. Even if you opt for the less adventurous 4×4 approach, the 90 degree angle slopes ensure it’s a white-knuckle ride.

Flanked by a quaint fishing village in the Sultanate of Oman, Six Senses’ Zighy Bay smoothly blends 82 bucolic pool villas into the majestic mountainous backdrop. But don’t be fooled by its rustic façade: the retreat is dripping in understated luxury. At 247 square metres, the smallest villas are bigger than most city apartments and all boast an open-plan design leading onto an outdoor majlis and a deliciously inviting infinity pool. There are indoor and outdoor rain showers and a bath big enough for two.

In short, it is possible to spend your entire stay in the buff, with the craggy mountains and cerulean coloured sea always within your line of vision. Unless, of course, you wish to take advantage of its plentiful amenities, such as its new dive centre – and with whale sharks, moray eels and turtles all waiting to be spotted, it’s highly advisable.

At Dining on the Edge, you can virtually touch the stars as you teeter on the brink of the universe – but you’ll want to hold on tightly as it doesn’t get any better than this.
