What will these upcoming iconic buildings look like?

Expo 2020 is still a few years away but over the last couple of weeks we can feel it getting closer and also less abstract.

The logo design was unveiled and covered the emblematic Burj Khalifa Tower at night as soon as it was released.

As Dubai Expo 2020 is built around the themes of ‘Connecting minds, Creating the Future’, the Expo Higher Committee in partnership with Emaar Properties launched a competition last summer to design three buildings around the theme: Mobility, Sustainability and Opportunity.

In case you missed this information, the winners of this global competition were just announced and the designs unveiled. Here is what you should know to keep up to date.

The Mobility Pavilion

The Winner: Foster+Partners
Foster+ Partners in the UAE has already designed the UAE pavilion for the Shanghai Expo 2010. This building in the shape of dunes can now be seen in Abu Dhabi next to Manarat Al Saadiyat in Saadiyat Island. They also designed the Masdar Masterplan a few years ago and participated in designing the Mall and the Souk at World Trade Center Abu Dhabi to name a few.

The Opportunity Pavilion

The Winner: BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group)
A lucky few may have come and listened to Bjarke Ingels’s lecture in Abu Dhabi during the Abu Dhabi Art 2015. He is one of the founders of BIG and he came to Abu Dhabi to inaugurate the opening of Warehouse 421 as BIG redesigned this old warehouse in Mina. With projects won all over the world, BIG has become a major name in the world of architecture, winning for example the design of Lego Museum House in Denmark, Google’s California Headquarters or 2WTC currently built in New York City.

This pavilion will be composed of a series of satellite-disk shaped structures. Grimshaw already designed the British pavilion for the 1992 Expo in Seville (Spain).
