The Act Dubai at the Shangri-La: dining with a dramatic twist
The first sign that something out of the ordinary awaits inside The Act Dubai are the pictures outside – they’re hung upside down. Guests coming here for the first time are expecting a theatrical show, it’s the venue’s main selling point and unlike any other dining experience offered in Dubai. What they cannot be prepared for, however, is the sheer drama entailed in one meal here.
To start with there’s the setting. Tables are arranged around the stage and guests dine within the theatre, creating an intimate feel that’s all part of the show. Because diners don’t just sit back, enjoy the excellent food and watch – they are part of the performance.
As sharing platters, based on a Peruvian-fusion tasting menu, are piled onto the table, including a fresh and tangy tuna ceviche, a succulent duck breast sweetened with orange wedges and a wonderfully full and creamy truffle-mushroom tagliatelle, guests are treated to a series of gasp-inducing acrobatic displays and masterful dance performances on stage.
In between, the performers return to their table in the middle of the restaurant floor to resume their role in the ongoing hunt for the murderer, a search that diners are expected to participate in.
