Portuguese food is not something we hear about much in Dubai but thanks to Tasca at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, we don’t have to go far to enjoy this flavorful cuisine in Dubai.
We received an invitation to experience the city’s first Portuguese brunch, curated by acclaimed Portuguese chef José Avillez.
Although the Friday brunch starts at 12:30pm when we arrived closer to 1pm, the place was already buzzing. The view is simply amazing-while one side overlooks the impressive Dubai skyline, the other offers uninterrupted views of the pool and the sea.
There is an in-house DJ who keeps the music flowing and the upbeat atmosphere going throughout the afternoon.
The extensive tasting menu means that made-to-order dishes are continuously brought to your table to be sampled and shared. We began with playfully presented wagyu tartare, the most delectable tempura cod cake and roasted beetroot housed inside a salad leaf and topped with feta cheese.
The next course of ‘Petiscos’- a similar concept to Spanish style tapas was our favourite. We adored the clams in a coriander and garlic sauce that we dipped the homemade bread in. The roasted veal chorizo and fried green beans were also moreish and we were quick to wipe it all clean in record time.
The main course of the ‘Tradicionais’ dishes was an absolute delight. We were served steamed and smoked sea bass, fish rice and wagyu chuck. These three dishes were accompanied with a light salad, roasted broccolini and Portuguese French fries. A hearty selection we were more than just satisfied with the array of dishes and the eclectic flavors.
Once done with the main meal it was time for us to just take a break or as the next course indicated ‘Sobremesa’. This is a tradition that involves relaxing and hanging out after a meal. Of course, at Tasca, it also means that dessert will be brought out to the table. This last course was definitely the grand finale in all its glory. We were served a tray of sweet goodness including the famous pastel de nata, fruit in a sorbet and a decadent hazelnut dessert.
Friday brunch at Tasca incloves feasting on an array of Portuguese favourites. All the dishes are served with imaginative flair and accompanied by a refreshingly fruity beverages.
