House of Curry located in JBR, serves an array of traditional Indian food in Dubai.
We can never resist tandoori chicken and naan and that is exactly why we were very eager to try one of Dubai’s latest eateries serving authentic Indian cuisine. It wasn’t just the food that had us excited, the décor too has a personality of its own.
Designed like a courtyard, the walls are blue and adorned with restored antique doors, reminiscent of the colors of Jodhpur the vivid ‘blue city’ in Rajasthan. The menu is extensive and embraces all the different styles of cooking from across the country with rich curries and fresh seafood.
There is also a calorie counter section that is definitely something those watching their waistline can order from. Not in the mood to watch our own calorie intake and as die-hard fans of samosas and pakoras we started with the deep-fried vegetable appetizers that we generously dipped into sweet and sour chutney, giving us our fix of typical street food that we often crave. The tandoori lamp chops cooked on an open fire were succulent and tender-definitely a must-try for those who love their meat. With a display of fish it we couldn’t help ourselves and requested a grilled pomfret that albeit tasty unfortunately had too many small bones that kept us from eating too much of it.
An Indian meal would be incomplete without the quintessential curry. We ordered a butter chicken and crab masala curry. Both were rich in texture and full of flavor and spices-we thoroughly enjoyed donning the gloves and breaking into the meat inside the crab legs. For dessert depending on the mood there is a fair bit of variety, but the hand-churned ice creams caught our attention-spices, coconut and rose delivered exactly the flavors they promised.
The crispy, freshly fried bright orange jalebis (deep-fried batter doused in a sweet syrup) and a hot cup of masala chai rounded up the meal well. Inviting and austerely warm, the ambience is suave and the food is familiar and wholesome, oh and thankfully the spices can be adjusted to suit all palates.
